presonus studiolive 24.4.2 studio and/or live

- By tree
presonus just announced the 24 channels version of the studiolive mixer in the namm show, which is awesome. 16 channels is just slightly not enough for my applications. but now this is definitely one of the consideration for this year.
let me go through a few things that gets my attention.
- 24 inputs digital mixer with firewire interface that allows multi-track recording and playback up to 24bits 48khz; you don't see too many firewire devices out there that does 24 tracks recording in 1 unit. althought it's only up to 48khz but that's quiet alot of bandwidth already.
- 4 subgroups, 10 aux buses; you can do lots of separated mixes in the unit.
- every channel has their own channelstrip for dynamic processing, 2 x digital signal processors(dsp), and 2 x 31 bands graphic eq; this pretty much means you won't need any other outboard gears for live.
- now the team is working on studiolive vsl software that allows remote control via wifi network. imagine you stand beside the musician on the stage to do their monitor mix with your smart phone, or tablet.
- $2300 USD; not a bad price for these much features
now just need for allen & heath to make the 24 channels version of their zed r16 mixer, and it's gonna be awesome. originally i preferred the zed r16 over the studiolive 16.4.2

get to use one of these boards finally on a live jazz recording project, here's a bit of the thought after spent a night with it.
- preamp quality - clean, open, clear, it captures all frequencies right and all the tracks sit well in the mix and also they sound true to the oringinal source when we play back the tracks after.
- eq - usable, but they don't sound very musical by their own compare to some of the yamaha, a&h, and even some tascam boards, requires a bit more tweaking to get the sound i'd prefer. this could be just me
- the fat channel - they get the job done, can't say if they're good or not as i'm still not very familiar with the character of the dynamic processors. would need more time to play around.
overall this is a great board, still as expected. told by a friend of mine this can record 24 tracks at 48khz via firewire flawlessly. the on board pres are clean and very neutral sounding that allows more rooms for post processing. the interface is straight forward, things can be found by instinct for first time user like me. not much downside about it beside the whole thing feels a bit more plastic. well, you get so many functions in 1 box. they've also developed quiet a few apps that you can remote the device with mobile devices which are worth to have a look.
